What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

Psychologists have PhDs, which are doctorates of philosophy, whereas psychiatrists have MDs, which are doctorates of medicine. Psychologists are trained in the biopsychosocial model in contrast to the biomedical model in which medical doctors are trained. Furthermore, psychiatrists are able to prescribe medications and psychologists, in most cases, are not.

How long will I be in therapy?

The frequency and duration of therapy depends upon a number of factors including but not limited to: presenting problem, presence of factors exacerbating the issue(s) for which treatment is sought, and access to funding/material resources to pay for treatment. During the initial appointment, or at a subsequent session, we will review your goals and treatment plans aimed at meeting them. At that time we will discuss a schedule for appointments that best suit you. CBT ranges between 4-20 sessions. DBT is between 25-50 sessions.

Do I need a referral?

No, you may contact Zdyb Centre for Health Promotion directly to make an appointment or request information. If you are planning to use extended health benefits you may require a physician’s referral.
